Last Friday I joined Emily + Kevin for their fun-packed wedding photography at The Tithe Barn at Bolton Abbey – a wonderfully restored, ancient barn, overlooking the amazing Bolton Abbey in the rolling Yorkshire Dales! The Tithe Barn is also one of the venues covered in my best Yorkshire barn wedding venues guide.

I joined Emily and team bride at her parents beautifully restored home in Sutton in Craven, also in rolling Yorkshire valleys, crowned by monuments like Lund’s Tower and Wainman’s Pinnacle.
Throughout the day there were loads of fun nods and traditions to Kevin’s Chinese family heritage, starting with ‘Door Games’! It was fun watching the groom and his entourage descend on the bridal preparations, try to bribe their way through the bridesmaids (with cash filled red envelopes and by completing challenges) to prove Kevins worth to marry Emily! Watching them bursting balloons using only body parts, act out charades, come up with a freestyle rap and assemble a photo fit was hilarious!
After a lovely dad/daughter reveal we headed round the block to their local church of St Thomas (bedecked in the lucky Chinese colour Red) for a charming ceremony by Vicar Suzie. Groomsmen played Emily down the aisle to violin & piano, and after signing the register, a young lad called Aiden sang a solo and moved more than a few guests to tears!
Confetti looked immense (mainly cause page boy Connor threw half of it on his tod!) and off we drove to Bolton Abbey for the reception. The Tithe Barn looked fab in Red (with tables named after summits they’d surmounted as a couple), and Kevin’s brother and Chinese guests wasted no time in handing out shots of Chinese Baijiu!
The meal was preceded by a lovely tea ceremony, with newlyweds honouring their elders. The meal was punctuated by lovely speeches, the cake cutting and impressively athletic Chinese Lion Dancers putting on an amazing performance, and spitting out lucky sweets!
After a delicious spit-roast duck dinner, while a few guests took a disco nap, Emily, Kevin & I took a stroll in the golden evening sunshine to a fab viewpoint in the village, overlooking the abbey. As evening rolled in, and further rounds of Baijiu downed, it was suddenyly time for first dance and revelry. Language was no barrier on the dancefloor and everyone got stuck in, and impressive robot moves were performed. After the bouquet toss and sparkler carnage, I bid the fantastic crowd farewell…
