Le Petit Chateau Wedding Photography, Northumberland: Karen + Rob [by Wedding Photographer Barnaby Aldrick]

On Saturday, Hamish & I travelled deep into Northumbria in the in the North East of England to shoot Karen & Rob’s wedding photography at a brand new venue up there called Le Petit Chateau in Otterburn!  The paint on the walls had literally only just dried – they’re not quite officially open yet, and this was only their the third […]

On the 6th day of Christmas my true love (photogra On the 6th day of Christmas my true love (photography!) gave to me… Vik + Steve!

I joined these dear pals of mine for their ‘Betwixtmas Carry On’ just a few days ago at Left Bank in Leeds (@leftbankleeds)!

They’ve secretly been married for a few months and wanted to celebrate it with all their lovely friends in the Crimbo Limbo! And what creative, musical, community affair it was too! As a lifelong musician Steve said with a captive audience like this he couldn’t resist playing some of his own songs to them, with support from sisters, friends and even joined the Soul Surgeons band to play Tom Jones’ ‘It’s Not Unusual’!

The day was packed with so much fun and laughter and it was a privilege to be there, as they got ready in their Burley home, strolling back in the surprisingly mild weather, through Burley Park back to LeftBank for a blessing by their brilliant celebrant pal Jaye Kearney (@kearneyjaye76), followed an epic 180 guest confetti shot (and later a poncho protected bubblefetti shot for the kids!), followed by a guest-made vegan / veggie buffet and cake bonanza, delightful speeches, essentially a full gig from the groom’s ensemble, and dancing carry on into the wee hours!

I’ve known Vik for about 20 years now, and Steve probably half that too, and it was a delight capture it all with so many familiar faces. It was also just a day before my wife and I’s 7th anniversary of our wedding also at LeftBank - and brought back so many wonderful memories of our special day there! So seeing my wife and son there (with his massive dinosaur toy) was super special for me.

Stay tuned for an extended blog post in the new year and their and register to be alerted when their full gallery goes live at: https://barnabyaldrick.pic-time.com/-VikSteve/register
On the 5th day of Christmas my true love gave to m On the 5th day of Christmas my true love gave to me… (I've been waiting for this one!) FIVE GOLDEN RINGS!

We all know that's the best line in the song right?! And it's just too good for wedding photos, as I'm taking pics of rings at every wedding!

I love trying to make a ring shot special. It's often harder than it looks, to add a bit of frame filling story and context around a couple of 'unbroken circles'! But they are so significant to the couple; the outward symbol of their union (I'm paraphrasing from the ceremony script I've heard a thousand times!) and even the colour and style they've chosen, will be worn until death do them part.

So it's more than just a snap of a wedding detail, it's a potentially creative opportunity to say something about them back to them with their rings. Be that the safe hands they're in, or the moment of exchange.

Or that the groom had to sellotape scraps of initialled paper to each ring box last-minute to guide his 'best' man when his moment comes!

On the 4th day of Christmas my true love (photogra On the 4th day of Christmas my true love (photography!) gave to me… MORNING PREPARATIONS!

The morning of a wedding day is super special to me. It allows me to get to know the key characters in the wedding party and for them to get to know (and to get used to) me as the photographer who'll be around them all day!

I find it one of the most creative parts of the day because there's no script! Unlike the unwritten rules of where you're allowed to be in the ceremony / for the speeches / first dance, every preparation space is different and a little bit electric! The wedding is afoot, and best laid plans are in place!

I try not to dominate, and dip in and out of the bride and grooms spaces with a bit of helpful organisation (almost like a secret bridesmaid), grabbing moments between people with good humour, then nipping off when I feel a break is needed, to capture details or a dress shot.

It's important for me for the players not to feel I'm somehow intruding, and yet I'm able to stretch those creative muscles. Instead of just capturing a dress hanging up like a ghost, I might wait till I see bridesmaids showing it to the flower girl and make something more of it. Or draw focus on a bride's hand holding tight to her mum's hand while getting into the dress.

It's not only a wonderful opportunity to capture all those magic relationship details, but also to go somewhere different, such as on the park run with the groomsmen, or see a bride show off the surprise ponies to team bride.

Those 3-ish hours I put into setting the scene and documenting the preparations, are like a virtual caffeine hit to get me charged and set for the wedding ahead!
Following on from 2025's daily themed highlights f Following on from 2025's daily themed highlights for the 12 days of Christmas... On the 3rd day of Christmas my true love (photography!) gave to me… THE PORTRAITS!

Whether it's night or day, sunny or rainy, I love that there's always portrait treasure to be found! These are a few of my faves from across the weddings I've photographed in 2025.

I try to get this section of the day done in 15-20mins, and it helps speed things along by having been trained at the pre-wedding practice shoot I do with every couple (see slide 2 for a wedding and 'pre-wedding' portrait from Harneet + Sid's lovely wedding).

I've always found a pre-wedding practice squirm (I mean "shoot") invaluable. It serves so many useful purposes; to get to know the couple better and get on the same page about the big day logistics/group shots and to get the couple used to being papped. But not only do they go into the wedding day having seen their pics but it makes the wedding portraits quicker so they're quickly back at the party with their guests!

I've been going through 2025's wonderful weddings I've been going through 2025's wonderful weddings for my end of year round-up highlights blog and thought I'd post daily themed highlights for the 12 days of Christmas!

So on the 2nd day of Christmas my true love (photography!) gave to me… WEDDING MOMENTS!

By all accounts, I'm a moment hunter! Between hitting the big beats of a wedding - the kiss, confetti, family groups, portraits, speeches, first dance etc - there's a whole world of moments to capture.

Whether it's a flower girl reaching up for a gowning up bride's hand in support, or a guest having a disco nap after overdoing it on the limoncello... a groomsman appearing mid reception with a wheelbarrow full of crisps, a guest bottle feeding his 6 week old baby while he drinks a bottle of beer or ... it's all gold!

These are moments I believe newlyweds both miss in the wedding whirlwind and cherish in the aftermath! And it's my magic job to chase these big and little moments down.

What a job! 🤟😄 📷

I thought these were too good not to share, and he told me it put me onto his Nice List, which is nice! (I got him to check twice, to be sure)
